@ The Jam Factory (2 Matilda St)
Legendary Ethiopian keyboardist / accordionist, synth player, composer and band-leader, Hailu Mergia arrives in Toronto for a rare trio performance. Best know for his work with Walias Band ዋሊያስ ባንድ, after relocating to the US Mergia recorded a lost classic of Ethiopian music, merging synth, accordion, and drum machine with an Ethio-Jazz meets laidback psych feel. Recent re-issues by crate digger label Awesome Tapes From Africa have helped bring Mergia’s work to new generations & fans. All the while Hailu has been evolving the synth & electric piano sound he helped pioneer decades earlier. His music feels weightless, rising & falling with some internal current, swinging at all the right moments. Synthesized notes melt into each other creating a malleable atmosphere for the listener to fall into. Don’t miss this chance to see a true maverick of Ethio-Jazz and beyond traverse the keys.
FAKE HUMANS (http://
Colin Fisher (Not The Wind, Not The Flag, etc) & Carl Didur (Zacht Automaat) team up for what sounds like some haunting 1970’s film score, to a movie set in space, where all the main characters are pretty much trapped up there & are just waiting to die, but are doing so in a very relaxed & peaceful way. Swinging in a lackadaisical manner, Fake Humans pull obvious influence from Alice Coltrane. A spiritual calm embs through their psych laced compositions.
DJ DAN VILA spins Ethiopian classics & other deep cuts all night long.
